The golden gun that appeared in the James Bond film was one of a kind. Lucky for collectors, Concord, Calif.-based Factory Entertainment will soon be offering 1,000 18-carat gold plated authorized reproductions. Like the film version, these one-to-one replicas break down into their component parts: the barrel is a fountain pen; the body serves as a lighter; the handle and trigger housing double as a cigarette case; and the trigger disassembles to form cufflinks.
Unlike the real thing, when the golden gun becomes available in September, it will be available in two forms: Limited Edition and Signature Edition, which includes autographs by both Roger Moore and Christopher Lee, the film's two stars.
How do these reproductions compare to the movie prop? Some would say the original, one-of-a-kind, 1974 piece is priceless, and many collectors agree that props central to a film or television shot's plot should fetch the highest prices. According to London's Elstree Film Props, the original golden gun was valued at more than $110,000 in 2008 -- which is the last time anyone saw it, because it was stolen.
