Rarity almost always helps to drive up the value of a movie prop, but in some instances it can actually hinder an item's appreciation. For example, in Superman III, after Christopher Reeve's character comes in contact with some red kryptonite, his outfit gradually turns darker as Superman becomes increasingly evil.
This "evil" Superman costume, currently for sale by London and Los Angeles-based Prop Store, is one of the darkest versions of the iconic outfit. For example, the normally bright, red boots are very dark, and the once-yellow belt is now light brown.
"We would say that this is a rarer costume, though the standard 'good' Superman suit would be more appealing to most collectors as it's more widely recognized," says Stephen Lane, Prop Store's CEO. In addition, the costume's original cape is missing, which certainly impacts its value. A replica cape, researched thoroughly against other Superman costumes Prop Store has acquired from Warner Brothers, helps to complete the aesthetics of the display. But $35,000 for a Superman costume? Whether it's `good' or `evil,' most super fans would agree: that's not half bad.
