Republican Governor-elect Scott Walker campaigned on a promise to kill high-speed rail in Wisconsin. He questioned the benefits and said it would leave the state with an annual operating cost of at least $8 million.
His critics said that could have been paid for with federal grants.
Walker believed taxpayers' dollars would have been put to better use fixing the state's roads and bridges. Given Walker's stance, the U.S. Transportation Department decided to redirect $810 million away from Wisconsin and redistribute it among 13 other states and the projected died.
