New York became the nation's most populous state in the 1810 Census and kept that title until 1960. It finally lost out to California in 1962.

New York still attracts immigrants -- about 20% of its population is foreign born -- but it's usually a big net loser of domestic residents. Many more move to other states than come to New York.

New York City turned around a mass exodus trend that began in the 1950s. Since 1990, the city has added about 1.3 million people, accounting for more than 80% of the state's growth over the past 20 years.

The city added an estimated 400,000 or so residents since 2000, more than any other U.S. city, but an increase of only about 5%.
