My wife and I lived in Pennsylvania for most of our adult life, and eventually the snow, ice and lack of sunshine began to make life unbearable. So, after four years of retirement, we moved to the Sun City community in Hilton Head last year.
It was hard leaving three grandchildren behind, but the close proximity to the beach, excellent food and great Southern hospitality will certainly add quality years to life!
Moving here cut our expenses in half. We were paying rent for an apartment in State College and bought a midsized house here; it's got two bedrooms and a two-car garage. It's perfect for us. Homes in this community range from $200,000 to $500,000. We pay $100 a month association dues and about $800 a year in property taxes.
There are a lot of recreational facilities and activities with three golf courses, three pools, tennis courts, a gym, 5,000-square-foot wood shop, bicycle paths. We're 20 minutes from the beach and from Savannah and an hour from Charleston. Doctors from Savannah have set up offices just outside our gates so you get wonderful health care as well.
