12 cities: Where to buy and where to rent

San Diego is among three California cities in the top 10 list of where it makes more sense to rent than it does to buy.

Accompanied by Sacramento and San Francisco, San Diego's glut of rental homes makes it tempting to hold on to your money and find a cheap place to lease by the month.

"We've had a lot of owners come to us who have had their homes up for sale but can't get the price they want," said Mari Stryjewski, a property supervisor at Chamberlain Property Management. "And since many of them have put lots of money into their homes and aren't willing to give them away, they put their home up for rent and wait for the housing market to turn around."
