Manhattan topped Trulia's list of the best cities to rent, with sky-high prices making it far less practical for residents to purchase a home. An average $3,700 a month to rent a home in Manhattan isn't cheap. But compare that to what it costs to buy that same home -- an average $1.7 million -- and it might make you a little more hesitant to break your lease.
"The big renter cities are the ones where home prices are the highest, so there's no surprise with New York," said Ken Shuman, a spokesman for Trulia. "Home prices are starting to come down in New York but it's still a lot cheaper to rent."
