The young and the riskless
Investors under age 35 are shunning stocks in stunning numbers. Their biggest risk: dying broke.
Tracy and Brandon Baird, 29 and 30, live in St. Louis with their 2-year-old son Decker.
Portfolio : 10% bonds, 60% cash, 30% stocks
Financial products manager Brandon Baird is aware that someone his age should have most of his savings in stocks. And that's how he did invest until 2008, when he "got spooked" by the jittery market and shifted most of his portfolio to cash.
"I feel like I doged a bullet," says Baird.
He's finally tiptoeing back into stocks now with new contributions to his 401(k) but is keeping the money he's already invested mostly in cash. As his family's sole breadwinner and with a second baby on the way, he says he can't afford to take chances.
"I may not dodge that bullet a second time."
