St. George is found in the southwest corner of the state, a lot closer to Las Vegas than to Salt Lake City, and is closer in terms of climate as well, with hot summers and mild winters. The latter has made it a Mecca for retirees.
But thanks to the recession, fewer people are retiring, which has cut a bit into the area's growth. In 2009, the Census Bureau projected the population was 137,473, so the town just barely grew in the last year of the decade.
