The city if Provo, an hour south of Salt Lake City, is the center of what has grown into a fair-sized metro area of more than a half million people. Driving growth is the main campus of Brigham Young University. Plus, Provo has gained the reputation as a good place to retire and a great place to raise a family.
In recent years, the economy has diversified with software, health and skin-care product companies setting up operations.
Unfortunately, the housing market may have grown too quickly during the boom and is suffering from a hangover. Foreclosures doubled last year to one filing for every 25 housing units, almost twice the national average.
