Barnstable, near the shoulder part of Cape Cod's arm, is filled with lovely homes, quaint communities and beautiful seascapes. It has shorelines on both Nantucket Sound and Cape Cod Bay.
"People love to be on Cape Cod for the beauty and the beaches," said real estate agent Donna Maloney.
One of its most famous communities is Hyannis Port, home to the Kennedy compound. Other famous one-time residents include Kurt Vonnegut, Judy Garland and Google co-founder, Larry Page.
The summer months, of course, swell the town's population but there are more than 45,000 full-time residents. The off-season attractions include recreational sports, like cross-country skiing and ice fishing in winter and boating and hiking in the spring and fall.
Don't look for cheap housing here. Maloney describes it as moderate but the best one can expect is a small ranch for about $250,000. The big homes right on the shore will set one back $3 million or more.
