The Jaffee family was chasing the American Dream when they bought their Connecticut house. But the two-hour commute to Mike Jaffee's insurance brokerage job in the North Tower meant he only saw his baby girl when she was asleep.
On Sept. 11, Jaffee decided to face his bosses' wrath and have breakfast with his wife and baby. He took a later-than-usual train and arrived at the World Trade Center to see flames shooting out of his office's floor. The plane had hit exactly where his desk was located.
Three hundred of his co-workers died that day. When his company set up a Family Assistance Center for survivors' families, Jaffee volunteered to take people to Ground Zero -- though he was fearful they'd be angry at him for having survived.
"But they were gracious in their grief and I knew my work from then on had to have a positive impact on people."
Jaffee quit his job to become a successful motivational speaker and authored a book, "Wake Up -- Your Life Is Calling" due out this year. His message: "That someday you are waiting for is today."
