The unexpected disaster in Fukushima is a clear setback for nuclear power advocates the world over. It doesn't help their cause that building a new nuclear power plant could require up to eight times more capital upfront than constructing a natural gas plant. For example, Jacques Besnainou, CEO of nuclear firm Areva, recently noted that the budget for a nuclear plant his company hopes to open next year in Finland has ballooned from $3 billion to $5 billion.
