The competition: Mercedes-Benz CLS
There are few secrets in the gossipy German auto industry, but Mercedes uncorked a big one in 2003 when it unveiled the first CLS, the four-door with coupe-like lines. Preoccupied with oddities like the X6, BMW has waited until now to launch its own sexy sedan in the Gran Coupe. Despite a singularly luscious interior, its lines aren't as voluptuous as those of the Benz, now two years into its second generation. Newness counts in this segment, and BMW is on a hot streak, but it arrives late with a less-dramatic product.
