Vermont's economy is driven by small companies, often in rural areas. Jobs are growing in professional services and health care, but still dropping in construction and manufacturing. About 12% of the state's workers are unionized.
While Vermont has a fairly low unemployment rate, that's partly because young people are leaving to find work elsewhere.
