Once upon a time, you had to be an alum or college staff member to hold a wedding on Agnes Scott's Gothic campus. Looking for ways to boost revenue, the college built a new chapel and opened it up in 2009 to all brides and grooms -- no college affiliation required.
It has continued ramping up the weddings ever since, and even hired a full-time staff member in 2010 whose primary focus is to manage and execute weddings. The school is hosting 28 weddings this year -- up from three in 2009.
Each wedding brings the school about $9,500, adding up to more than $200,000 in extra cash this year.
"To come back and get married here is important to them," said Demetrice Williams, director of special events and community relations. "And for alums who may not have been back to campus or ever given to the college, having a wedding at Agnes Scott makes them rethink their connection with the college."
So it's a move that leaves everyone with a happy ending.
