Dodge's new compact is a huge improvement but it's got a few weak spots.
That six-speed manual transmission was another weak point in the Dart. A manual shifter should be fun to use and this one just isn't. It's a long, slow trip between one gear and the next and the shifter doesn't satisfyingly click into gear when it gets there.
Fortunately, the 1.4-liter engine will also be a available with a sporty dual-clutch automatic transmission. Unlike other automatics, dual-clutch transmissions provide a firm, connected feel and, when tuned properly, can be almost as much fun to drive as stick-shifts. If it were me, I'd probably opt for that choice.
