The "Purple People Eater," named after the hit song by Sheb Wooley, won the 1959 Sports Car Club of America National Championship for its class. It's powered by a 283-horsepower V8 engine with a four-speed manual transmission. Nickey Chevrolet had won the same Championship the year before with two other purple Corvettes -- hence the "Mk III" on this car -- but both those cars are now lost, said Tom Stephani, whose family owned Nickey Chevrolet. This is the only surviving Purple People Eater.
