After falling behind the competition, Microsoft has been playing catch up.
The software giant unveiled its years-in-the-making Windows 8 operating system in October. It also launched the Surface tablet -- Microsoft's first PC of its own design -- and the Windows 8 phone.
The new operating system helped Microsoft (MSFT) end a year-long streak of declining Windows sales, but the overall line of products has received mixed reviews.

Microsoft has struggled to keep up with innovative rivals Apple and Google. At the same time, industry-wide PC sales have been falling as users migrate to mobile devices.
But the blue-chip tech company has a long-term strategy based on a unified experience across multiple devices. It is also betting on cloud computing.
So far, however, investors seem skeptical. Shares of Microsoft rose about 3% last year, lagging the broader market.
