Alphabet, the new parent company of Google, brought one of Wall Street's leading women on board this year, and investors liked what she had to say. Ruth Porat joined Google in May as its CFO after decades in the same role at Morgan Stanley.

And during her first earnings call with Google, she delivered what investors wanted to hear: a more disciplined approach to spending. Google's stock soared 13% that day and didn't look back.
