Sears -- which is formally named Sears, Roebuck and Co. -- was initially a successful mail-order catalog company. The first Sears retail location opened its doors in 1925 in Chicago. Roebuck was the name of the man that Sears hired as a watch repairman and who eventually became his business partner.
