It's almost like being on campus again -- at IBM, hires are assigned to multidisciplinary teams designed to promote collaboration and diverse perspectives.Teams may include recent grads in fields from engineering to design to digital marketing, says spokesperson Carrie Altieri. And there are lots of other young professionals around: More than 40% of the workforce is made up of millennials, Altieri says.
Many new grads aren't entirely sure what they want coming out of school -- IBM not only recognizes that, it says it's ok. To support career movement and empower employees, IBM uses AI tools to track employees' skills and feed them relevant openings. Last year alone, 20,000 IBM employees moved into new internal positions.
Hiring managers look for applicants who show curiosity, an awareness of what's going on in the world, an understanding of the industry and a desire to learn. --R.M.
