Nearly half a million fewer young adults had jobs in August than in July. But numbers don't tell the whole story. Recent grads share what they've faced in the job market.
Betsy Ostrowski made the dean's list every semester while she studied athletic training at the University of Michigan. She graduated in 2010 and this past May got a master's degree in exercise physiology with a 4.0 GPA.
And now she's struggling to find work.
"I graduated with a great GPA from a great school, and it's just embarrassing," she said. "I have nothing to show for it except for my student debt."
She recently moved to Oklahoma, where she's continuing to look for an athletic trainer position. She has had two interviews, but since Oklahoma doesn't require athletic trainers in schools and there are only a few local colleges, Ostrowski is worried the situation won't improve anytime soon.
"I know that part of this is that my job field is a little limiting," she said. "But when you're not succeeding in the job market, after you played all these sports and did well in school, you start to lose confidence. I didn't expect this."
