Thousands of federal workers lost jobs, and millions will stay at home without pay due to budget cuts. Five workers share their tough choices.
Barlow's last day at work was March 1, the day President Obama signed an order that triggered automatic federal budget cuts. Barlow worked as a general supply specialist for three years at the Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg, Pa.
Her husband also works for the federal government and is expecting a furlough. The couple have a 13-year-old daughter, so the combination of his 20% pay cut and the loss of her $51,000 salary is "going to be rough," said Barlow.
She's applied for dozens of jobs after finding out of the layoff in mid-February. So far, she's landed only one interview. Her family has already cut back on spending on things that aren't necessary.
"We'll have food for the family," Barlow said. "If we have to do without, we'll cut TV."
