Protecting the food supply

new york hunts point 2

An aggressive storm defense is being mounted around Hunts Point -- a waterfront area in the South Bronx that's home to dozens of warehouses and serves as a food distribution hub for 22 million people.

Plans, depicted above, include flood protection walls that double as green space, a self-contained energy production and distribution system, and shipping docks that can double as regional transport centers in a "Maritime Emergency Supply Chain."

While Hunts Point was spared during Sandy, city officials say a similar storm during a different tidal period could devastate the currently undefended area.
