Flying economy doesn't have to be miserable

For those willing to shell out just a little extra, several à la carte services offer experiences usually reserved for First Class passengers.

There are now several levels of airline classes. Plenty of airlines have launched something between economy and business class, and there are some stand-out amenities for those willing to fork over a little more.

The upgrade usually comes with a wider seat, better food and free booze. British Airways' World Traveler Plus offers noise-cancelling headphones and serves its three-course meals on real china.

JetBlue began offering its Mint service last year, which is currently available between New York and Los Angeles or San Francisco. For another few hundred dollars per fare, passengers are treated to complimentary WiFi, preferred baggage claim and a food menu inspired by trendy New York City restaurant Saxon + Parole.
