America's 6 fastest growing state economies

These states had the biggest economic boost in 2014. Can they keep it up?

1. North Dakota

  • State GDP: $50 billion
  • Growth in 2014: 6.3%

North Dakota takes the top spot as the country's fastest growing state for the sixth year in a row.

The state's oil and gas sector is a power house and remained resilient, at least in 2014. Consider that mining contributed to over a third of the growth in North Dakota's economy.

People are flocking into America's fifth smallest state thanks to its thriving oil industry. North Dakota's population recorded a 2% increase over the past year. That's led to an increase in housing and related construction.

Residents of North Dakota are benefiting in many ways from the energy book. The legislature state legislature has decreased both income and business taxes.

But sinking oil prices are already starting to hold North Dakota back. While the state remained at the top of the list in 2014, its GDP growth fell from 9.7% in 2013 to 6.3% in 2014.
