Ben Carson's early life was tough with his father leaving the family when he was only eight years old. He, his mother and brother had to scramble, but he says his first full-time job was as a biology laboratory assistant at Southwestern High School in Detroit.
Carson went on to earn a medical degree at the University of Michigan Medical School and did his residency in brain surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
