'All sorts of reasons to be paranoid'

As a full-time photographer specializing in maternity and birth photos, Lexi Anderson has had an up-close look at the baby boom in Williston.

Not only does she work closely with the local hospital to shoot deliveries, but she has three kids of her own, too -- an 8-year-old daughter, a 4-year-old son and a 2-year-old daughter -- and she is four months pregnant.

Anderson stayed back home in Missoula, Mont., for three years as her husband, Larry, worked in North Dakota's oilfields. Last year, she finally made the leap to be with him. But it meant leaving behind their family and a house with 5 acres of land for the kids to run around on.

They were lucky enough to get corporate housing, otherwise they wouldn't be able to afford to live there. But the new house is right on the highway where huge oil trucks speed by day and night, so she has to keep an eye on her kids at all times. And finding daycare that accommodates her work hours has been such a challenge that Anderson sometimes brings all three kids to work with her.

She also worries about her children as more single, rowdy men move into her neighborhood. Her husband's truck and boat were already stolen, and her dog was even taken. Luckily she got her pup back after filing reports with the police and posting signs everywhere, but these kinds of experiences have been very unsettling.

"I've never been paranoid or skeptical, but there are all sorts of reasons to be paranoid now," she said.
