You may consider your dog to be your child, but the IRS won't.
Jeff Gentner, an enrolled agent from Williamsville, N.Y., said one of his clients submitted an unusual amount of medical expenses one year. When he asked why they were so high, the woman looked upset and said, "She died."
Gentner asked who had died, and she responded that her dog had been very sick and passed away, and the thousands of dollars in expenses were all for vet bills.
Gentner had to give her the unfortunate news that as close as she was to her dog, those medical expenses are not deductible.
