This Italianate-style 1884 home was built by J. F. Smith, a hardware merchant who grew wealthy during a building boom in Galveston. The house survived the deadliest hurricane in U.S. history, in 1910, and is a state-registered landmark. The Smith family retained the house until the 1970s.
The house is located in the heart of Galveston, about a mile from the shore. Fine materials were used in its woodwork, fireplaces and floors; most of it is still intact, according to the listing agent, Bill Gottfried.
Pocket doors, bay windows, high ceilings, plantation shutters and stained-glass windows adorn the interior. There's a quiet courtyard for outdoor entertaining.
