Single moms. Retirees. Entrepreneurs. Americans of all ages are doubling up with roommates as rents continue to climb.
After my divorce, I lost my home and started renting.
I used to work as a makeup artist in the entertainment industry and now I'm in public relations. Many friends and associates have to supplement their income or reduce their expenses and the best way to do that is to find a great roommate.
I found the place on Craigslist. My roommate owns the house and I rent. I pay $850, utilities thrown in. Rents average about $1,800 to $2,000 around here. It's not a cracker-box and there's a yard and a porch.
I love it, although it took a couple of months to work out the relationship with my roommate. She's younger than me, 44, and a very stand-up person.
I see a lot of my friends moving in with each other. They're getting older and, financially, it's a big advantage.
