Why it's admired
The company that invented masking tape, Scotchgard, and Post-it notes is admired because it remains innovative, even as a global giant. The conglomerate invests approximately $1.4 billion in R&D annually, or 5.5% of sales. And its products - from air filters to circuit boards - have become necessities for people and businesses around the world. Still, 3M's stock declined nearly 28% in 2008 and the company recently cut jobs and capital costs amid declining demand. Still, 2008 sales were up 3.3 percent to $25.3 billion. -L.D.
