The job:
Combine nursing skills and managerial know-how to influence the way patient care is delivered. Nursing directors supervise nurses, implement standards and streamline operations to make sure patients are getting the best possible care. They're also the key link between administrators, nurses and doctors, making sure communication flows smoothly. If you're itching to change the way health care is provided, consider moving into this role. With the health care field booming, there's a big need for nursing directors at hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and other medical centers.
How to switch:
In addition to several years of experience as a registered nurse, coursework in nursing administration or health care administration is helpful. Taking on more leadership and teaching responsibilities in your current job can also help pave the way.
