Nestled in the westernmost part of New York State, Amherst is a stone's throw away from Niagara Falls and within driving distance of skiing and snowboarding. Those are perks for residents who put up with over 90 inches of snowfall a year. Yet folks seem very loath to leave; Amherst is home to a sizable community of empty nesters and retirees (35% are 50 or older). While there are some major employers here, such as Kaleida Health and the University of Buffalo, there's no real downtown. --L.G.
