Light-years from its days as Hay Capital of the World, this fast-growing city outside Phoenix is shaking off the doldrums of the housing crash and working toward a brighter future. For starters, health care: The Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center opened last fall, joining three state-of-the-art hospitals already located here. Education is on the rise too; Gilbert just passed a five-year strategic plan to improve its public schools. Cheap homes, safe streets, and sunny skies have lured lots of newcomers over the past few years. For now, however, the city still lacks a sizable downtown. --L.G.
