Thank the rich literary history and in particular the Iowa Writers' Workshop, whose graduates include John Irving, Flannery O'Connor, and T.C. Boyle. In fact, UNESCO designated Iowa City as the world's third "City of Literature." When residents aren't in the presence of university students and great writing, they can be found enjoying the annual Iowa City Jazz Festival and the nationally known acts it brings at the campus' Old Capital building. --J.S.
