While most Chapel Hill residents are devoted to the University of North Carolina (it's right in town) -- local fire trucks have been painted Tar Heel blue -- this is more than just a college town.

Good education and health care jobs abound in the area. Educated converstion is easy to find: nearly half of adult residents have a graduate degree.

With more than 700 acres of parks and additional protected natural areas, locals say it's sometimes easy to forget that you're in an urban area and not in the middle of a forest. --J.S.

Lower exemption amounts allowed for high-income taxpayers. For tax years 2009 and 2010, a surcharge that equals 2% of total liability for taxpayers with income over $60,000 single filer ($100,000 joint) and 3% of total liability for income over $150,000 ($250,000).
