WASHINGTON (CNN) - The Federal Emergency Management Agency said Wednesday it will hand out debit cards worth $2,000 each to victims of Hurricane Katrina.

A FEMA information officer said the cards will go initially to stranded victims who have been moved to rescue centers such as the Houston Astrodome.

The cards are intended to be used to buy food, transportation, gas, and other things the displaced people need.

State officials are praising the move to get immediate aid to storm victims.
