An oddly proportioned creature, the Mercedes-Benz R-class looks as if a giant grabbed the smaller ML crossover by both ends and pulled it like taffy. The R-class is longer and lower to the ground. As a result, it's a bit minivan-esque (though it doesn't have the requisite sliding doors). Perhaps this is why it hasn't been a big seller.
But what a shame: With a lower center of gravity than the tall off-roaders, the R-class is a pleasure to drive. You notice its length in tight turns, but it's not scary or tippy. You quickly get used to feeling the back end so far behind you.
The additional length makes the R-class massively roomy, accommodating a comfortable third row and six people total. The R-class (available in diesel) also has the interior chic that one expects from a car of its class, including an LCD stereo screen and real wood accents.
Get the optional panoramic sunroof and driving the R-class is like captaining a luxurious yacht with the highways as your ocean.
