This time, it came out a little different, though. Maybe it's just experience or maybe it's because this is the "New Chrysler" and they're trying harder. But the Challenger SRT-8 is probably the overall best SRT product yet. In fact, the Challenger line-up -- from the SRT-8 to SE -- could be Chrysler's strongest product introduction since the Chrysler 300.
The Challenger SRT-8 is fast, of course, but it also handles well, something that couldn't have been said of the classic model it so closely resembles. A the same time, it doesn't chuck you around in your seat over every bump and ripple. The suspension is compliant enough for comfortable driving around town, even with its massive 20-inch wheels.
The Challenger's considerable size and weight dull the driving experience somewhat. For my money, the smaller, less powerful -- and much less expensive -- Mustang GT is more fun. The Challenger SRT-8's big engine makes a proper muscular burble. That, too, is a little too quiet, though.
The Challenger's Electronic Stability Control can be turned off with a button press but, even when on, it allows the 425-horsepower engine to readily tear the back tires loose from the pavement. You can be safe and still let Challenger's trunk end snake around a little.
