GM CEO Rick Wagoner left his home Wednesday morning in a Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid sedan. Once he got to Washington, he briefly drove a Chevrolet Volt test vehicle built in a Chevrolet Cruze body.
The Malibu Hybrid is a "mild hybrid" car. That means it can't drive on electric power alone, but it gets some extra push from an electric motor. GM has improved this system since it was first introduced a couple of years ago. It now offers a fairly significant improvement in fuel economy and smooth performance.
For those who don't want to spring for the hybrid, GM also sells a Malibu with a four-cylinder engine and a six-speed transmission that gets 22 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. The Malibu is a first-rate car, and the six-speed provides smooth performance. For most buyers, that's probably the smarter choice.
