Now that it's been identified as one of GM's core brands, expect to see more GMC products hitting the market. A new crossover SUV, smaller than the big three-row Acadia, is expected soon.
To some observers, GMC might seem like a largely pointless repetition of the Chevrolet truck line. But it's actually a highly profitable way to get more sales out of those products while giving Pontiac-Buick-GMC dealers trucks to offer.
"It's low-cost and high-margin, and it's offering something that has a clear position," said J.D. Power's Tom Libby. "Basically it's an upscale truck."
While GMC has stretched a bit into car-based crossover vehicles, customers still accept those as "trucks." It remains to be seen how far that can go.
