As volunteers with Portland Mountain Rescue, staffers dash from their desks to retrieve lost hikers and skiers on Mount Hood. When Michael Leming, Nike's chief talent scout, warned Nike interviewers that he might have to leave the office at inconvenient times, they said, " 'What's more important, saving lives or selling shoes?' " he recalls. "They were totally cool."
