When Pillsbury realized that customers didn't prefer that their cookie dough have pecans, the division switched to the cheaper walnut. Research also revealed that the business' practice of sprinkling chocolate chips on top of the dough, which let chips fall to the wayside, was wasteful and unnoticed by customers, so they started to mix the chips in. Combined, both changes cut costs by $5 million a year.
