"It's more difficult to find companies in the 'woman and minority' category that meet our requirements," says Tanya Allen Easter, manager of Chevron's supplier diversity/small business program.
To fill those gaps, Chevron is taking an active role in educating prospective vendors. It signed on as a founding sponsor for the UCLA Anderson School of Management's Management Development for Entrepreneurs Program, a four-day crash course of lectures, case discussions and applied workshops.
With the help of SBA officials in Houston, Chevron has also put together a year-long program of monthly training sessions aimed at educating potential suppliers on how to do business with the petrochemical giant. Launched in January, the program includes sessions such as "Networking Etiquette," "Negotiations," and "Developing Your Value Proposition."
