If you're starting to think we're getting our mileage numbers mixed up, it's not so. The Prius, Lexus and Escape hybrids really do get better mileage in the city than on the highway. That's because they can rely more their electric motors in city driving, but not at all on the highway.
In the case of the Escape Hybrid, which can cruise at up to 40 mph on electric power alone, that results in an amazing 34 mpg around town.
The Escape also has a roomy and highly functional interior, a smooth ride and decently responsive steering. All of this also applies to the Mercury Mariner Hybrid, of course, which is essentially the same vehicle.
