By 2000, minivans had passed their prime, too. Their brief moment in the sun was blotted out by popular mid-sized SUVs that offered the interior space (almost) of a minivan but with an image that spoke of freedom rather than boring domesticity.
In 2000, the Caravan finished just out of the top 10 among all vehicles. Today, with the Grand Caravan (the smaller Caravan is no longer offered) and the Chrysler Town & Country, Chrysler Group remains the best selling minivan maker in America, despite all its troubles.
Competition is a little thinner today, though, with both Ford and GM having departed the shrinking minivan market to build big three-row crossover SUVs, instead.
