This consultancy helps corporations and government agencies solve engineering and scientific problems, a specialty that has made Exponent a defensive play in a weak economy.
In addition to providing support during litigation, Exponent designs products and helps clients navigate regulatory waters, from reviewing over-the-counter medication labeling to analyzing risks for large construction projects. Product failures, health hazards, and environmental risks don't fade in recessions -- and so far, neither has demand for Exponent's services.
And although the company's revenue growth slowed to single digits for the first time in three years this past quarter, analysts praise Exponent's cost-cutting measures and see more opportunities for the company in the stimulus-fueled spending on infrastructure and energy.
