The future of car safety is here
New, groundbreaking features can alert you to danger before you even know it's there. But added safety comes at added cost.
Problem: 179,000 accidents each year are caused by lane drifting
Possible solution: Lane departure warning
What it does: Informs you with light or sound if you're about to cross a lane marker without using a turn signal. The Infiniti EX35 crossover also brakes slightly on one side to gently nudge the car back into line.
Availability: Luxury cars, including Audis, Acuras, Infinitis, Mercedes-Benzes, and Volvos.
Estimated cost: $500
Worth it? Only if you can find a system you can live with - and that may be tough. The warnings can quickly become irritating, especially on narrow roads where you have to hug the center. I found that the alert on the Infiniti EX35 beeped far too often. The one on the BMW 7 Series is more tolerable. The steering wheel shivers as you start drifting. Lesson: Try out this feature in a test drive before you invest in it.
